Book reviews – Native American spirituality

If you’re interested in Native American spirituality, these books are some I greatly enjoy. I’ve learned a lot about their view on the world.

Other Council Fires Were Here Before Ours is a must to read if you work with stone massage and want to understand why Native Americans see stones as “Record Keepers” and “Stone People”. A fascinating read about the creation of the world and how worlds before us have thrived to later be destroyed so there were room for new and better worlds to emerge.
Morther Earth Spirituality is an interesting book teaching about Sioux spirituality, history and ceremonies. Based on Black Elk’s visions for the future, the book speaks of paths to heal ourselves and our world.
Dancing the Dream is a guide into personal growth and development based on the philosophies and teachings of Native Americans. An insightful book into different personalities, life-lessons and the steps we take on our path. It is very non-judgemental and promotes the acceptance of all people no matter where they are on their path. There is no right or wrong, there are none better than others. We’re all dancing the dream together at different and necessary stages of our life-path.
Edward Curtis was a great photographer, perhaps the greatest of his time, travelling the Americas documenting the Native Americans. We have all seen copies of his photos of the proud warrior sitting on horseback or the photo of Sitting Bull. What is little known is that he was also a historian, creating The North American Indian a 20-volume, an opus describing and capturing the Native Americans before it was to late.

The book is a collection of some of his more unknown photos accompanied with descriptions and tales from various Native American tribes.

This book in French shares the tales of the Kiowa, richly illustrated by the artist Federica Matta. The author N Scott Nomaday and Federica Matta visited the Kiowas to hear the tales and capture the spirit of their legends and culture. The result is a warm little book; poetic and easy to read. It would do well as a children’s story book.
